Right now, there are children and young people in our community who need someone like you – someone with a big heart and a willingness to open their home. Foster Carers come from all walks of life, but they share one thing in common: a place in their heart to care.
As a Foster Carer, you provide care in a safe, temporary home for children and young people who are subject to Child Protection Orders. The children and young people range from newborns to 18 years, and may stay for a night, a few weeks, or for years, depending on your capacity and their circumstances.
As a Kinship Carer, you provide this care and support for children or young people who are part of your extended family or cultural network.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Homes
AnglicareCQ recognises the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children receiving care within their cultural community. Carers with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children may choose culturally sensitive and informed care coordinated by the Foster Care Service at Central Queensland Indigenous Development (CQID) or Nhulundu Health Service.
Busting Foster Care Myths
Myth: You must own your home.
FACT: Renting is perfectly fine as long as you have a safe, stable home for a child.
Myth: I am too old to foster.
FACT: There is no upper age limit, as long as you are healthy and able to care for a child. Retirees often make excellent carers.
Myth: I work full-time, so I can’t foster.
FACT: Many working people foster. Flexibility is key, and care arrangements can often work around your job.
Myth: You need to be married or have children.
FACT: Single people and those without biological children make fantastic foster carers.
Myth: I can’t foster if I have pets.
FACT: Pets are generally welcome and can even provide emotional healing for foster children.
Myth: It is too hard emotionally to say goodbye.
FACT: While some care is short-term or emergency, there is a high demand for long-term and permanent placements.
Myth: I will have no say in the child I look after.
FACT: Agencies work to match the right child with the right family, and you have a voice in the process.
Myth: I must be married. Same sex couples can’t apply.
FACT: Carers can be male, female, single, married, or de facto, a same sex couple, working full or part time. Anyone can apply to be a foster carer if they are committed to providing a safe, stable, and supportive environment.
Myth: Birth parents and foster children never see each other.
FACT: Foster carers support, rather than prevent, maintaining relationships with birth families when it is safe to do so.
Myth: I don’t have enough money.
FACT: Foster carers receive financial support (allowances) to cover the costs of care.
Myth: I can’t be a foster carer because I am a FIFO worker.
FACT: Yes, Fly-in-Fly-Out (FIFO) workers can be foster carers. There are different types of family-based care, including short break care, which may be for a weekend of during school holidays. You can choose what suites your lifestyle.
